Imagine my surprise and delight when I received the news that the How To Be Books Podcast had been shortlisted in the Book Category for the Independent Podcast Awards. As a dedicated book enthusiast and podcast creator, this recognition means the world to me. This is now the fifth nomination we have received alongside the International Women’s Podcast Awards, Sonic Bloom Awards, People’s Choice Podcast Awards, and now this excellent new venture.

What are the Independent Podcast Awards?

The Independent Podcast Awards represent a fresh and exciting addition to the podcasting landscape, with a primary focus on recognising outstanding independent podcasts originating from the UK and Ireland. These awards offer a platform for podcasts that are created without the substantial financial backing of large organizations, ensuring that the spotlight shines on grassroots creators rather than high-profile celebrities.

This event is also characterised by its inclusivity, as it encompasses a diverse array of podcast genres spanning 18 categories, catering to a wide spectrum of interests and passions. Whether you’re into Arts & Culture, Comedy, Crime & True Crime, Education, History, Fiction, Food & Drink, Health & Wellbeing, Music, News & Current Affairs, Personal Development, Politics, Science & Technology, Sport, True Crime, Business & Finance, Parenting & Family, Social & Political Commentary, Travel & Adventure, or Women & Non-Binary topics, there’s a category that suits your preference.

The culmination of this celebration of podcasting excellence will occur at a prestigious ceremony in London on October 30, 2023. It’s an event where the hard work and creativity of independent podcasters will be acknowledged and celebrated on a grand scale.

The Independent Podcast Awards are backed by several organisations, including Adelicious, Captivate, Overtune, and Pirate. These sponsors have played a vital role in making this event a reality and supporting the independent podcasting community.

In essence, it’s an event that highlights the immense creativity and diversity within the podcasting sphere and offers well-deserved recognition to those who passionately share their unique perspectives and stories through this dynamic medium.

The journey begins

Creating a podcast dedicated to books was a dream I had nurtured for years. Hence I had always been passionate about literature, and my desire to share that passion with a broader audience led me to embark on this podcasting adventure. From the very beginning, I knew it would be a labour of love, and it truly has been.

Choosing the right format

One of the first challenges I faced was deciding on the format for my podcast. I wanted to create content that was not only engaging but also meaningful. After much research and brainstorming, I settled on a format that included author interviews, book reviews, and discussions on literary trends and themes – especially on the website. This multifaceted approach allowed me to connect with a diverse audience, from avid readers to aspiring writers.

The joy of connecting

One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting a book-themed podcast has been the opportunity to connect with authors, publishers, and fellow book enthusiasts. Interviewing authors whose work I admire has been a dream come true. As a result, these conversations have not only enriched my understanding of literature but also allowed me to forge meaningful connections with some incredibly talented individuals.
