In an annual report, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) highlighted a significant increase in attempts to censor books in libraries across the United States, documenting a 65% increase in targeted book titles compared to the previous year. The report, derived from reports filed by library professionals, community members, and various news stories, paints a concerning picture of censorship efforts, particularly in public libraries.

The OIF’s compilation of the aims to shed light on the censorship issues facing libraries and schools, offering insight into the broader cultural and political battles over access to diverse materials. The list is a critical tool for informing the public and advocating for the freedom to read.

“Budget cuts and staffing challenges undermine our ability to fulfill our missions. In these extraordinary times, libraries take action.”

Emily Drabinski, ALA President

ALA President Emily Drabinski expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “…these are not ordinary times. The unprecedented wave of organized censorship intensifies, particularly in our public libraries.” Drabinski’s statement underscores the challenges libraries face, from adverse legislation to the impacts of climate change and budget cuts, all of which strain the mission of libraries to provide unrestricted access to information.
